How to study for the CSLB C-36 plumbing contractor exam
Treat it as two exams, because it is
The most common reason competent plumbers fail the C-36 path is that they prepare for the trade exam and treat Law and Business as an afterthought. Split your study time roughly sixty-forty between trade content and the CSLB Contractors License Law and Reference Book, and drill contract requirements, licensing rules, payroll and workers' compensation basics, and lien timelines the same way you drill code.
Build the code habits before you memorize numbers
CSLB trade exams are closed book, but the reasoning still comes straight from the California Plumbing Code. Work through the water distribution, drainage, venting, water heater, and cross-connection chapters and write your own one-page summary of each: the thresholds, the tables you use, and the clearances. Numbers you derive yourself stick far better than numbers you read once.
Drill the thresholds that carry penalties
A handful of figures appear over and over: the 80 psi regulation threshold, minimum drain slope by pipe size, trap seal depth, trap arm limits, vent terminal clearances, seismic strapping placement, and relief valve discharge rules. Put them on cards and get to the point where you can state each one cold, including what happens when you are over or under the limit.
Learn California-specific rules separately
California departs from the national baseline on water efficiency, seismic bracing, and energy requirements, and local jurisdictions amend the code further. Keep a separate list of the California-only items. On the exam these are the questions that separate candidates who studied a generic plumbing book from candidates who studied California.
