How to study for the Virginia journeyman plumber exam
Confirm which code edition the exam uses
The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code adopts and amends a specific edition of the International Plumbing Code, and the amendments matter. Verify the edition in the current candidate information bulletin before you buy a code book, then study only that edition and its Virginia amendments.
Separate tradesman rules from contractor rules
Roughly a fifth of the exam is Virginia law and scope. Learn the difference between a tradesman license, a contractor license class and the qualified individual designation, because those questions are free points once the structure is clear.
Drill fixture unit math until it is automatic
Drainage fixture units, water supply fixture units and the sizing tables they feed are the highest-yield calculation topics. Work sizing problems for a full bathroom group, a commercial restroom and a multistory stack until the lookup sequence is muscle memory.
Tab the code book for speed
Tab Chapters 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 plus the fuel gas sizing tables. Time your lookups: anything over 45 seconds means your tab set is wrong.
Run a six-week plan

Does a Virginia journeyman plumber license let me run my own business?
No. The tradesman license authorizes you to perform the work. Bidding or contracting plumbing work for the public requires a separate Class A, B or C contractor license with a designated qualified individual.
Which code does the Virginia plumber exam test?

How much experience do I need before I can test?
