What a journeyman exam covers
A journeyman exam tests whether you can apply the code without a supervisor reading over your shoulder. Most states let you sit for it after you document a set number of on-the-job hours — usually accumulated through an apprenticeship — and the exam itself is heavily weighted toward code navigation, calculations, and installation rules rather than theory recall.
Because the underlying code books (the NEC, the Uniform or International Plumbing Code, the mechanical codes) are national, roughly two thirds of what you study transfers between states. The other third is state amendments, licensing law, and the administrative rules published by whichever board runs your exam. That is why the pages below are organized by jurisdiction rather than one generic journeyman test.

How to prepare for a journeyman exam

- Work code-navigation drills with the book open. Most journeyman exams are open-book and timed, so speed finding an article matters as much as knowing it.
- Track which domain you miss most and drill only that domain for a week before going back to full-length simulations.
Frequently asked questions
What is a journeyman license?
A journeyman license authorizes you to perform trade work unsupervised, typically after you have documented the on-the-job hours your state requires. It sits above apprentice and below master or contractor licensure in most jurisdictions.
How many hours do I need before I can take a journeyman exam?
Hour requirements are set state by state and are commonly accumulated through a registered apprenticeship. Check the licensing authority listed next to your exam below — CraftPATH only states an hours figure on a page where we can cite the board's own published requirement.
Are journeyman exams open book?
Many are, but not all, and the list of books you may bring is set by the licensing board or its exam vendor. Practice with the same book you plan to bring and tab it the way you intend to use it.
Does a journeyman license transfer between states?
Sometimes, through reciprocity agreements between specific states. Where reciprocity does not exist you generally re-test on that state's amendments and licensing law rather than starting over.
